Wien und Leipzig, Franz Deuticke, 1926. Large 8vo (24.2 x 16.9 cm). xiv, 324 pp., 35 text illustrations, eight large, folded, chromolithographed plates. Original blue cloth with gilt title on the spine and front board. A fine zoogeographical, ecological, and phylogenetical study on lizards (mainly) and toads of the Balkan Peninsula, in particular the Dalmatian islands (now in Croatia). The taxonomical contribution by Wettstein contains the description of new species-level taxa. Well-illustrated, especially the full-colour plates, which are very good. Kammerer (born 1880) dedicated this study to his daughter Lacerta (!). He committed suicide in the year this was published, after, as it now seems, being wrongly accused of scientific forgery and fraud (see A. O. Vargas, J. Exp. Zool. 312, 2009: Did Paul Kammerer discover epigenetic inheritance? A modern look at the controversial midwife toad experiments ). Publisher's (!) library stamp on the title page, some very light offsetting to the plates, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Rare. Nissen ZBI, 2151. Dedicated by Kammerer to his daughter Lacerta
