Moens, J. C. B.
De Kinacultuur in Azië, 1854 t/m. 1882.
Batavia, Ernst and Co., 1882. 4to (29.2 x 22.7 cm). xii, 393 pp.; partly coloured map as a frontispiece, 31 tissue-guarded plates including phototypes and steel engravings. Original blindstamped pictorial burgundy cloth with gilt title on the spine and gilt floral vignette of the kina tree on the front board.
A standard work on the quina or cinchona-culture in Asia, and Indonesia in particular. With detailed information about its origin (South America), its huge medical importance, the introduction in Asia, preferable climate and soils, the various species, growing, breeding, and much more. Compiled and written by the Dutch botanist and director of the Gouvernements-Kina-Onderneming Nederlands Oost-Indië, Johan Carel Bernelot Moens (1837-1886). The plates, mainly showing trees are very good; the first one shows the author amid a group of trees described by him as a new species. The map shows the Cinchona gardens near Bandoeng. An uncommon work, especially in this fine state. The original binding only with some very light wear, and internally clean, unmarked. Neither in Nissen BBI, nor in Stafleu and Cowan.
