Roma, Salviucci, 1877. Large 4to (28.5 x 21.2 cm). 80 pp.; five double-sized lithographed plates, of which four in full colour and one partly coloured, containing maps. Disbound.

A rare treatise by the Italian herpetologist, malacologist, and Darwinist Michaele Lessona (1823-1894) on the amphibians of northern Italy, a region known for its diverse herpetofauna. All species and their infraspecific and intraspecific characters are described in detail. The distribution maps are finely coloured. The plain plate shows eggs and juveniles. Published in the Atti della Accademia dei Lincei serie terza (I). A few light spots in the text, some vague offsetting, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Rare. Adler II, pp. 92-93.
