Avignon, Louis Chambeau, 1766. 4to (25.6 x 19.3 cm). Portrait, [iv], 552 pp. Contemporary full mottled calf. Spine with five raised band, compartments with gilt floral ornaments and morocco label with gilt title. Marbled endpapers. Edges red.

A collection of reprints of the earlier works by the Swiss geologist Élie Bertrand (1713-1797). It includes the important Mémoires historiques et physiques sur les tremblements de terre (1757), and the Essai sur les usages des montagnes et usage des montagnes de l'Abissinie, and Musei Eliae Bertrandi; Conspectus: les fossiles. Furthermore it contains the Lettre sur les inondations du Nil; Essai de minéralographie et d'hydrographie du Canton de Berne et mémoires sur la structure intérieure de la terre... Dedicated to the Polish king Stanislaus with his portrait (frontispiece, a well-executed reproduction on old paper). The lower part of the half-title with an old paper repair. Several pages with a small wormhole with slight loss of a few letters. Otherwise a very good, clean copy, in a well-preserved contemporary binding. Ashworth and Bradley, 30; Ward and Carozzi, 194.
