Paris, "Bureau de Souscription" [F. E. Guérin-Ménéville], 1833-1839. Nine volumes in nine. 4to (28.3 x 18.3 cm). Text and 720 plates of which 718 hand-coloured. Uniform contemporary green morocco over marbled boards. Spines with four raised, blind-tooled bands, compartments with gilt triple borders and title. Marbled endpapers, sprinkled edges.

Renowned for its rich, charming, accurate, inspiring plates. A very rare complete set of the coloured edition, although two plates (46 and 712) are inadvertently left uncoloured. A few plates placed out of sequence, but all plates present. This seems to be a rather rare condition, usually a few plates are missing in any set. All major groups of animals and plants are treated, but shells are far more prominent than one would expect. Some shelf wear, perhaps a few sporadic spots; several plates age-toned as usual or with some light offsetting. A few text sections age-toned, but in general a much cleaner than average copy. A few text leaves with a skilfully repaired tear. Otherwise a very good, attractively bound set. Caprotti II, p. 29 (193); Nissen ZBI, 4616.
