Preserved in two large binders with marbled boards (labelled 1-23, A-L; and 124-231, M-Z), containing 44 [22; 22] thick blue paper portfolios (40 x 25 cm) with handwritten labels pasted on the front leaves, each containing three to six dried plant specimens, numbered 1-231, 160a, for a total of 232 different species.

A superbly preserved herbarium, systematically arranged, numbered, and nearly always with collecting localities and dates, the Latin and German names of the species and families, and the place in Linnaeus' Systema, all handwritten on printed labels published by the Verlag der süddeutchen Apotheker-Zeitung in Stuttgart. This indicates that the collecting of plants served as a basis for the knowledge of medically important herbs. The plant specimens are very carefully arranged and held in place by tiny paper strips. Collecting dates are mainly from 1898-1900. The specimens are usually of flowering plants, all belonging to the German (western European) flora. Martin Engelhardt of the Institut für Botanik, Naturschutz und Pomologie (Tübingen) was so kind to inform us that the author is, in all probability, the Stuttgarter pharmacist Robert Schäfer (1879-1908) (see Wankmüller, 1985: p. 156). According to Engelhardt (in litt.), “…it seems quite obvious … that this herbarium was made during his apprenticeship as pharmacist. To proof this it would be necessary to know which plants he collected and where they where were collected”. A fine, unique item. Wankmüller, A.
