"M. Cossmann's 'Catalogue' really supplements the well-known works of M. Deshayes, and brings the whole up to date. The extent of the revision necessary to accomplish this, the critical knowledge possessed by the author in regard to living mollusca, and to bibliography, and the infinite pains he must have bestowed upon the work, cannot be fully appreciated except by those who institute careful comparisons between the old work and the new. It is not too much to say that the originality of the Catalogue, and the systematic and convenient manner in which the author has marshalled his facts, places his work in the front rank of malacological literature. It will always form a useful book of reference to students of Tertiary Mollusca." (From a contemporary review). A rare set of the main work and the first two supplements. Up to 1913 three more supplements were issued which are not included. Complete collation of this set is as follows: 1 (1886) 174 pp., 8 plates; 2 (1887) 218 pp., 8 pls.; 3 (1888) 328 pp., 12 pls.; 4 (1889) 385 pp., 12 pls.; 5 et supplément (1892) 167 pp., 3 pls.; Appendice No 1(1893) 16 pp., 14 text figures; Appendice No 2 (1896) 94 pp., 3 pls. Uncut. Provenance: with on the front pastedown the pictorial, palaeontological bookplate of Jeffrey D. Stilwell. Paper a bit toned a few sections brittle at the edges (as always); damp stain to the first two plates of the fifth part, otherwise a very good set in a sturdy binding. Added: a printed card, by Cossmann, stating "Hommage de l'auteur avec demande d'échange de publications paléontologiques. M. Cossmann 95, rue de Maubeuge". Nissen ZBI, 962.
