Washington, DC, United States National Museum, 1875-1889. Thick 8vo (22.5 x 14.7 cm). 1,017 [104, 51, 249, 98, 515] pp. and several handwritten unnumbered leaves; 84 plates. Red buckram. Spine with gilt lines and black morocco label with gilt title.

Five major herpetological contributions, of which four by the great American zoologist and palaeontologist Edward Drinker Cope (1840-1897), with an original postcard written and signed by the author bound in. The full collation is as follows: 1) Checklist of North American Batrachia and Reptilia (1875) 104 pp.; 2) On the Zoological Position of Texas(1880) 51 pp.; 3) Checklist of North American Reptilia and Batrachia (by H. C. Yarrow, 1882) 249 pp.; 4) Catalogue of Batrachians and Reptiles of Central America and Mexico (1887) 98 pp. with many annotations in old hand and some manuscript pages bound in; 5) The Batrachia of North America (1889) 525 pp. and 86 lithographed plates. Provenance: Before the first blank an old postal card is bound in, written by Cope to Ernest Ingersoll (1852-1946), dated and stamped March 9 1887. Rear side of the postcard full of text by Cope and with his signature. Ingersoll was an American naturalist and explorer, who wrote several books on American natural history, and, for instance, Dragons and Dragon Lore. Cope mentions reception of Ingersoll's publication on scallop fishery (published by the United States Commission of Fish and Fisheries in 1887), and informs him of a bankruptcy that cost Cope, and probably Ingersoll, some money. Typed index bound in before first paper. Small library label pasted on spine, stamp on front pastedown, weak blind stamp on title page of first paper, various annotations and several leaves with manuscript notes (probably by Ingersoll) inserted before and in the fourth paper. A very good, unique item, probably Ingersoll's personal copy.
