Wien, M. Gerlach (F. Schenk), 1881. Folio (37.6 x 29.8 cm). Engraved title, letterpress title, ten pp. (Roman numerals); 110 wood-engraved plates. Publisher's very rich gilt polychrome decorative cloth. Boards with bevelled edges. Floral endpapers. All edges red.

The Viennese firm of the influential Austrian engraver, and publisher Martin Gerlach (1846-1918) is renowned for its exquisite (practical) art books. This is a rare and beautifully preserved early example. "Gerlach started his self-named publishing firm in 1872 in Berlin, which primarily focused on prototype and pattern books for artists and craftsmen. His works on photographic prototyping were particularly influential. Together with Ferdinand Schenk, he later founded the Polygraphic Art Institute in Vienna and formed the Gerlach & Schenk publishing firm. During this time, Gerlach used several budding artists for book illustrations, including a young Gustav Klimt" (SDSU website). This work shows monograms, in a multitude of styles, but also many crowns, book initials, etc. This second, expanded, edition was aimed at a more international clientele, being written in French and English, in addition to the original German. Nevertheless, it is rare to see a copy outside Austria, and very rare to see one in such a wonderful condition. Tiny stamp of the Assay Office Library, Birmingham, in the lower margin of the first blank verso. Otherwise very good, clean, complete. Not in Schneider-Henn.
