Plauen im Vogtland, Christian Stoll [Heinrich Schmittler], [no date but 1907-1908]. Folio (48.2 x 32.1 cm). Title page; 48 [24; 24] full-colour printed and numbered sheets. In original quarter burgundy linen portfolio over burgundy-lettered boards. A rare set of designs for the textile industry, in particular the fabrication of carpets and rugs, with up to nine different designs on each plate. The style varies from Art Nouveau to very early Art Deco. The Centre De Documentació I Museu Tèxtil in Terrassa states that these suites were published in 1907-1908. A few designs, with floral elements, are comparable to those by Atelier Haebler in Stoll's Ornamentik der Gegenwart , which was published in 1905-1906. The names of the designers - Fritz Herz, and 'Atelier Haebler' - are printed in the first series. All plates are present. The title to the second series is identical to the first, but with the series number "I" corrected to "II" by hand, and all plate numbers are preceded by the number II. Plates 9 and 23 (of series I) are - apparently - from before numbering. The portfolio is probably a 'deluxe' version: a similar one, but with black letter print and without matching linen spine and corners is known too. Schneider-Henn mentions only the first series. A few plates with some marginal soiling; the portfolio only minimally rubbed at spine ends. Otherwise a very good copy. Schneider-Henn, 333 [as Neue Vorlagen ].
