Leipzig, Hartleben, 1838. 8vo (22.5 x 14.3 cm). vi, 304, iv pp.; 18 engraved, tissue guarded plates. Contemporary full blind stamped cloth. Spine with gilt ornaments and title. Speckled edges. Nicely illustrated account of travels of Eduard [Friedrich] Poeppig (1798-1868) through Cuba and Peru, as well as observations on the eastern Mediterranean, South Africa, Oman, and Polynesia, with emphasis on climate, people and tribes, as well as their culture, contact and interaction with Europeans. Poeppig was a university professor, explorer (one of the first to travel over 5,000 kilometres downstream from Peru to the mouth of the Amazon River), botanist, and archaeologist. Spine gilt faded. Light, mostly marginal spotting throughout, otherwise a really nice and complete copy of a work that is often very foxed or otherwise in bad condition. Not in Sabin or any other major bibliography.
