Paris, J. B. Baillière, 1836. 8vo (21.2 x 13.3 cm). vi, 102 pp. Early 20th century half morocco over marbled boards. Spine with five raised bands and gilt title. Marbled endpapers. In this work the author describes the most significant peak in Central France, the extinct volcano Puy-de-Dome, and its geologically interesting surroundings. The work was both available separately, and as part of a series, Description pittoresque de l'Auvergne, publiée par livraisons indépendantes... . The half-title indicates the series, the half-title verso explains that the papers are in fact "independant" (independent), and the title is for this part alone. ADDED in the rear are two near-contemporary papers with roughly the same subject: A. [C. P. F.] Von Lasaulx, Etudes pétrographiques sur les roches volcaniques de l'Auvergne, suivies d'une note sur les roches désignées sous le nom d'hémithrène et sur quelques autres du plateau gneisso-granitique du département du Puy-de-Dôme, et de quelques autres notes. Traduites par F. Gonnard (Clermont-Ferrand, Ferdinand Thibaud, 1875). 8vo. 224 pp., two engraved plates of which one large, double-folded. This fine work by the German geologist and petrologist Arnold Constantin Peter Franz von Lasaulx (1839-1886), professor of geology and mineralogy at the university of Bonn, is on the mineralogy of the Massif Central in central France. Apparently Von Lasaulx wrote the work in German and it was published piecemeal between 1868 and 1871 as Petrographische Studien an den vulkanischen Gesteinen der Auvergne . The latter work is very interesting from a geographical point of view too. In 1830, Lecoq and Bouillet co-authored another important paper on the region, Vues et coupes...Puy-de-Dome (Ward and Carozzi, 1345). Lecoq's paper slightly spotted, mostly in the margins; the Von Lasaulx work with an age-toned and partly spotted title page, the two other papers otherwise near entirely clean. All three are uncommon to rare. A neatly bound set. A special copy with additional rare papers on the same subject
