Wissenschaftliche Ergebnisse der Deutschen Tiefsee Expedition auf dem Dampfer "Valdivia" 1898-1899. Vierzehnter Band. Tiefsee-Radiolarien.
Jena, Gustav Fisher, 1908. Four parts in three. Large 4to (33.1 x 24.3 cm). x, 706 pp.; 87 mostly chromolithographed plates, two partly coloured maps, 225 text figures. Uniform 20th-century half cloth over patterned boards. Gilt title on the spines. Several original printed wrappers bound in.
This is the complete Radiolaria-section, one of the largest and most important parts of the results of the first German scientific voyage around the world. The author is the German zoologist Ferdinand Carl Valentin Haecker [or Häcker] (1864-1927) and this may be regarded as his magnum opus. The illustrations are very beautifully done and reminiscent of those of Ernst Haeckel. This work includes the following parts: "Spezieller Teil. Die Tripyleen, Collodarien und Mikroradiolarien der Tiefsee" AND: "Allgemeiner Teil. Form und Formbildung bei den Radiolarien". The latter part occupies the text from page 477 onwards, and the plates numbered 63 to 87. This part seems to be extremely rare. A few library stamps on preliminary and title pages, otherwise a very good, complete, and clean set. Cat. BM(NH) Supplement, p. 423; Nissen ZBI 1789, 4625.
