Berlin, Emil Felber, 1892. Three volumes in one. 4to (27.2 x 19.7 cm). Title to the whole work; titles to the parts; 791 pp. [289; 270; 232]; 22 plates [9; 9; 4]. Contemporary half cloth over marbled boards. Spine with gilt lines and title. Original printed wrappers bound in.

Rare, well-illustrated monograph by the renowned German ethnologist Adolf Philipp Wilhelm Bastian (1826-1905) "a 19th-century polymath remembered best for his contributions to the development of ethnography and the development of anthropology as a discipline. His theory of the Elementargedanke resulted in Carl Jung's development of the theory of archetypes. In 1873, he was one of the founders and first director of the Ethnological Museum of Berlin, and served as its first director. Its collection of ethnographic artifacts became one of the largest in the world for decades to come. Bastian is remembered as one of the pioneers of the concept of the 'psychic unity of mankind' - the idea that all humans share a basic mental framework" (Wikipedia). This work contains three parts, viz., Reisen auf der vorder-indischen Halbinsel im Jahre 1890. Old stamps on second and third title page. Binding a bit shaky, erasure at spine bottom; first index leaf, second wrapper and half-title loose, a bit frayed and chipped at fore edges, otherwise very good.
