Nürnberg, Gabriel Nicolaus Raspe, 1774. Thick 8vo (20.1 x 12.3 cm). Two title pages with woodcut vignettes (to the series part, and to the work as such), xxiv, 758 pp.; 22 large, folded, engraved plates. Contemporary half calf over plain boards. Spine with five raised bands. Compartments rich gilt with floral patterns and reddish-brown morocco label with gilt title. All edges red.

Written by the German entomologist Philipp Ludwig Statius Müller (1725-1776). This work is based on Linnaeus's Systema Naturae (12th edition), and Maarten Houttuyn's much extended (37 volumes) free interpretation of the latter, which was published in Dutch. This part contains the complete orders Coleoptera and Lepidoptera, as well as Mantodea, Blattodea, and Hemiptera. A second volume (not included) deals with other insect classes. Well-illustrated. Boards rubbed, gilt to one compartment abraded; internally however, an excellent, clean and unmarked copy. Horn-Schenkling, 15617; Soulsby, 95 (pars).
