Göppingen, Jllig & Müller, 1903. Folio (51.2 x 36.0 cm). Title page, [ii] pp.; 22 (of 30) fine, chromolithographed plates. Original portfolio with limp, pictorial boards.

A beautifully illustrated work with original Jugendstil or Art Nouveau floral designs by Gustav Kolb (1867-1943) and Karl Gmelich (1875-1955), and based on local German plants. The plants, and in particular their flowers, are illustrated after nature, with a clear Art Nouveau touch, followed by stylized illustrations of the same, either on the same or on a different plate. Some book dealers date this work from 1902, but Plate 22 bears the year 1903, which shows that the dating of this work by Schneider-Henn and others must be incorrect. Lacks Plates 2, 4, 9, 10, 15, 20, 28, 30. Plate 6 present twice. Rather slight wear to the boards and edges, spine split and reattached with Japanese paper; small chip to the top outer edge of the title page, edges may be a bit frayed, or with short tears; one plate with a larger closed, marginal tear; light toning, as usual, otherwise a very good, clean and unmarked copy. Schneider-Henn, Ornament und Dekoration, 302.
