Genera et species animalium Argentinorum. Insecta Lepidoptera (Rhopalocera). Tomus IV.
Bonariae (Buenos Aires), G. Krafft, 1967. Large 4to (35.3 x 26.3 cm). Several title and dedication pages, 449 pp.; 25 plates (of which 19 in full colour, tissue-guarded). Original embossed and printed cloth. Pictorial endpapers. Edges red.
The most important and by far the most beautifully illustrated work on the Rhopalocera of South America, published in a 19th-century style. This copy is ample proof of how regrettable it is that such works are no longer issued. This Part IV, dealing entirely with Papilionidae, subfamily Papilioninae, arguably containing many of the most beautifully coloured large-size butterflies. The original descriptions of the species treated are repeated in full in their original languages. The six uncoloured plates show genitalia and other taxonomically important parts. Only 1,000 numbered (stamped and signed by the editor, Descole) copies were printed by Guillermo Krafft, after drawings of various artists. This is copy number 389. Today especially, the later-published parts three and four (the present copy) are very difficult to obtain. Boards partly sunned; small stamp in the lower margin of the first title; inner joints partly cracked due to the very heavy bookblock, front board starting, otherwise a fine, clean copy.
