An important and very rare publication on insects and arachnids from Zanzibar (Tanzania), with the detailed description and illustration of many new species of insects, Orthoptera, Blattaria, Mantodea, Coleoptera, Diptera, Hemiptera, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera, Myriapoda, and spiders. Written by the German zoologist - in particular entomologist - Carl Eduard Adolph Gerstaecker, or Gerstäcker (1828-1895), co-author of the authoritative Handbuch der Zoologie; and beautifully illustrated by the German illustrator and entomologist H. Tieffenbach (1820-1892). With 18 plates, this copy is complete. Minimal, scattered foxing, restricted to a few text leaves and plate margins, but otherwise excellent, clean.
