A well-documented bi(bli)ography of the foremost explorer of Madagascar, Alfred Grandidier, who - together with his son Guillaume (1873-1957) - edited and published the famous, authoritative, Histoire physique, naturelle et politique de Madagascar, which was published between 1875 and 1958 and written by the Grandidiers and many specialists in diverse fields of zoology and botany, as well as many other publications related to Madagscar and other islands in the Indian Ocean. Provenance: the pictorial (maritime) bookplate of Colonel Ph. Milon " Sapiens ubicunque est peregrinatur. Just. Lipsius" [wise wherever he is staying], apparently a motto by the Flemish philologist, humanist and philosopher Justus Lipsius (1547-1606). Fore edge uncut. A few small spots, and some light toning, otherwise a very good, clean copy in an attractive binding.
