Frankfurt am Main, Moritz Diesterweg, 1896. 4to (30.0 x 23.0 cm). xi, 321 pp.; 63 plates, including ten chromolithographed plates with printed, explanatory overlays; seven coloured maps (several large, folded), five text illustrations. Original black quarter cloth over pictorial boards.

A profusely illustrated travelogue, describing the author's zoological, botanical, and ethnographical expedition through the Malayan archipelago, and in particular through several regions and islands less travelled before and long after. The short title appears on the front board; the longer one on the title page. The author, Wilhelm "Willy" Kükenthal (1861-1922) narrates the whole journey, from Genoa to Singapore, then to Java, and further east to the Molucca's, with stops at Ambon, Halmahera, and Ternate, onward to the Obi and Banda islands, Celebes (Sulawesi), Borneo (now Kalimantan) (Indonesia), and a second trip from Singapore to northern Borneo (Malaysia). Kükenthal taught zoology in Breslau, Jena and Berlin, and organized several expeditions to the East and West Indies, this being one of his most extensive missions. The fine plates are after original photographs, showing, e.g., Dayak people and their art. The last ten plates (with Roman numbers) are excellent chromolithographs of cultural artefacts, with explanatory overlays. The title-page states that the work includes four maps, but actually there are seven, as described in the Verzeichnis der Karten on page xi. Fore edge uncut. Edges a bit toned, but otherwise very good, clean. Cat. BM(NH) p. 1032; Henze 3, p. 95. Not in Bastin and Brommer.
