Title in red and black; full coloured frontispiece (tipped in and tissue-guarded); xii, 359 pp.; 29 fine, tissue-guarded photographs (some folded) and six, mostly tinted, folded maps and charts, including one geological map with nine different colours. Contemporary half calf over marbled boards. Spine with four raised bands and gilt title. In protective transparent cover.

The rare first - Italian - edition of this classic monograph on the first ascent of the Ruwenzori mountains in Central Africa. Written by the Italian medical doctor, explorer and mountaineer Filippo De Filippi (1869–1938). Very richly illustrated, with photographic images, including several very large (up to 100 cm wide) panoramas of and from the snow-clad mountain tops. In the rear are two appendices, on the geographical, astronomical, geodetical and meteorological observations. From the library of the Swiss Prof. Samuel Preiswerk-Sarasin (1853-1923) and bequested to the S.A.C. Library in Basel (label on front pastedown). The first owner's name and purchase date [8 December 1908] on the front free endpaper recto, together with a S.A.C. stamp; repair to the margin of pp. 227-228, otherwise a very good, clean copy. Cat.
