London, Her Majesty's Stationery Office, 1891. 4to (29.2 x 24.6 cm). Half-title, title page, xxix, 525 pp.; 17 text engravings, 29 lithographed plates of which four with printed overlays, and 15 in chromolithography; 43 charts (maps) including one double-sized full colour map and several others also large, folded; 22 diagrams of which several large, folded. Original dark green blind-stamped and pebbled cloth. Spine with gilt title. Dark blue endpapers.

The complete report on deep sea deposits, including sunken whale bones, pelagic shells, and various mineral deposits including manganese nodules, which since then have become of economical interest, and are treated here in a separate chapter. Written by the British marine biologist, "father of oceanography", and scientific editor of the series, John Murray (1841-1914), and the Belgian geologist and mineralogist Alphonse-François Renard (1842-1903). Uncut. Some light shelf-wear; short tear in spine top, the endpapers and part of the inner joints cracked, due to the heavy book block, a few imperfections at edges, two text leaves partly discoloured due to a former insertion of an unrelated low-grade paper sheet, one leaf with a diagonal cut in the upper outer corner, without text loss. Otherwise, very good, clean and unmarked. In all a very good copy. Rare. Nissen ZBI, 4754.
