Spine with six raised bands; bands rich gilt, compartments with very elaborate gilt floral vignettes and gilt title. Blind stamped vellum boards; edges with gilt dentelles. Floral pattered endpapers. Green edges.

A rare work by the German naturalist Heinrich Gottlieb Ludwig Reichenbach (1793-1879). Contains a chapter on Goethe's Metamorphosenlehre and Geschichte der botanischen Systematik, Versuch eines natürlichen Pflanzensystems. Includes a large plant name index. Printed on strong paper with very wide margins. The spectacular boards, in a mock 16th-century style, are highly peculiar. Old stamp of the Palazzo San Donato library in the lower margin of the title page. Front hinge tender, some rubbing to board edges, in particular the corners, and, apart from some foxing, a fine, attractive copy. Stafleu and Cowan, 8887.
