Paris, F. G. Levrault, 1823. 8vo (21.9 x 14.0 cm). xii, 272 pp.; 60 engraved plates [AND] 40 pp. [24, 16]; 24 [12; 12] engraved plates of which three finely hand coloured. Near contemporary half morocco over marbled boards. Spine with gilt ornaments and title. Marbled endpapers.
The first work is of taxonomic importance as Duméril introduced new taxa. The plates are of a very high quality, being drawn by the great French natural history artist Jean Prêtre under the direction of Turpin. Bound in the rear are the two parts of explanations, and 24 engraved plates, of which three hand-coloured, and others printed in sepia, of Lacordaire's l'Introduction a l'entomologie [1834-1838]. On the front pastedown an armorial bookplate, with a knight's helmet, and a shield with two crescents, a tower and a stretched right hand (without text, however), and a tiny oval stamp at the preface drophead title; no other markings. This work is often found with considerable foxing but this is very good, clean copy, with a useful addition. Horn-Schenkling, 5521, Nissen ZBI, 1192.
