Gotha, Becker, 1832. 8vo (20.4 x 12.9 cm). xiv, 559 pp.; ten folded lithographed plates of which nine nicely hand-coloured after and by J. Ausfeld. Original paper-covered boards. Spine with gilt ornaments and red morocco label with gilt title. Red edges.

Harald Othmar Lenz (1798-1870), a pupil of Blumenbach, is perhaps best known for his Gemeinnützige Naturgeschichte (1834-1839). This rare herpetological textbook with fine plates is his other major work. Rare first edition. The second was published in 1870. Includes 29 figures of snakes, and the one non-coloured plate which has several anatomical details with explanatory text printed in script. Covers rubbed, especially at edges and spine ends; spine label with some chipping; the first few folded plates slightly soiled. In all a very good copy, unmarked and with clean text pages, rarely seen in such good condition. Adler III, p. 99; Cat. BM(NH), p. 1090; Nissen ZBI, 2247. Not in the Crane Library.
