Important contribution to the very rich reptile fauna of the Caucasus mountains region, bordering Europe and Asia, by the Russian herpetologist Alexander Mikhailovich Nikolski (1858-1942). Nikolski was particularly interested in in systematics, faunal surveys, zoogeography and life histories (see Adler, who stated "[he] was the leading Russian herpetologist at the turn of the century").
