Philadelphia, PA, The Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, 1864. In five parts. 8vo (24.5 x 15.5 cm). 318 pp. With four originally hand-coloured lithographed plates depicting birds. Uniform printed wrapppers.

The ANSP Proceedings were the foremost zoological journal in the U.S.A. during the 19th century, being especially strong in Mollusca, entomology, and vertebrate palaeontology. But this volume also contains two papers by the American ornithologist John Cassin (1813-1869) and includes four beautiful plates with hand-coloured lithographs of new South American species described by Cassin. "[Cassin] died in 1869 of arsenic poisoning caused by his handling of bird skins preserved with arsenic" (Wikipedia). Uncut, therefore a bit creased and chipped at fore and bottom edges. Rear wrapper of the last issue detached, otherwise a very good, complete volume. Neither in Cat. BM(NH) nor in Zimmer.
