Paris, Treuttel and Würtz , 1822. Two parts in one. 8vo (20.5 x 12.8 cm). 130 pp. (xiii, 14-75, [76-83], [ii]; [1]-38, [39-45]); 27 [19; 8] engraved, tinted plates. 19th-century quarter burgundy linen over marbled boards. Spine with handwritten label.

An important contribution to malacology by the promising British explorer and malacologist Thomas Edward Bowdich (1791-1824), a friend of George Cuvier and Alexander von Humboldt. Illustrated by the author. He died of malaria while staying in Banjul, Gambia. With a handwritten dedication by the author to the French zoologist and malacologist Achille Valenciennes (1794-1865), also with the autograph of the great Scottish malacologist Robert Boog Watson (name written on the front free endpaper recto), then bequeathed to the Conchological Society (their bookplate on the front pastedown and blind-stamp in a text leaf margin; and subsequently bought by the American malacologist and malaco-historian Richard Irwin Johnson (1925-2020), with his stamp in the top margin of the front free endpaper recto. The plates on peculiar brownish paper; those to the second volume are without numbers. Some wear to board edges; some spotting, mainly in the plate margins, as usual. Otherwise good.
