Smith, M. A.
The fauna of British India, including Ceylon and Burma. Published under the authority of the Secretary of State for India in Council. Reptilia and Amphibia. Vol. II. - Sauria. [Original edition].
London, Taylor & Francis, 1935. 8vo (22.6 x 15.8 cm). xiii, 440, iv pp.; 93 text figures (two groups page-sized), one numbered plate, double-sized map of British India as frontispiece, one other map of India and Southest Asia. Original red blind stamped burgundy cloth with gilt title on the spine.
An excellent monograph discussing lizards and including 297 species of which several described as new. This was the second of a projected four volumes series that should update and replace the earlier (1890) work of Boulenger in the same series. Only three volumes were published. In the rear a for pages catalogue of the works published in the series, The fauna of British India, or in preparation in January 1935. Bookplate of the Imperial College on the front paste-down, stamp of the Huxley Library of this Institute on the front flyleaf, frontispiece margin, and a few text page margins; spine very lightly sunned, and ghost of a label on the front board; otherwise a clean, uncut, copy in the attractive original binding. The quality of the pages and illustrations is far superior to those of the later reprints.
