Lister, M.
Historiae sive synopsis methodicae conchyliorum et tabularum anatomicarum editio altera.
Oxoni [Oxford], Clarendoniano, 1770. Folio (37.3x 24.2 cm). Letterpress title, two pp. preface; seven pp. with engraved titles, introduction, systematical table, abbreviations and section review, index title, dedication leaf, 12, 77 pp.; 1056 figures (numbered 1-194, 197-922, 924-1058; 168.a) on over 400 plates (several double-sized, folded); a further 22, partly unnumbered, engraved anatomical plates. 20th-century full calf. Spine with four raised bands and gilt title. Speckled edges.
The final, 1770 Huddesford, edition. The work was first issued in parts between 1685 and 1692, and then in a second edition, with a different title, between 1692 and 1697. Another edition, however, identical to the 1770 edition, was published in 1823. The illustrations, by Lister's daughters Susanna (1670-1738) and Anna (1671-1700), are excellent and rival with 19th-century illustration in accuracy. Figures 173-174, and 183, to mention a few, have intricate borders not present with the same figures in the copy shown by the natural history library site. Figure 222 is erroneously numbered 58. Nissen errs in listing figures 195-196, and not listing figs 168.a and 1008. He records "6 b-Nummern" and 19 additional plates, but here there are 22 plates, as recorded for the 1692-1697 edition. Some book dealers report a higher number of figures (e.g., 1083, or 1084), apparently including those without number. Provenance: 'Presented to the Lit Phil Soc., N Castle on Tyne by Mrs Williams, Hampstead, London' written in an old hand in the top margin of the title page. Small, old, weak, round stamp of the Society on all leaves. Binding modern, but not inelegant. Some dampstaining to the lower margin in a few sections; an occasional spot, a few annotations (Latin names, added to the figures) in an old hand, otherwise a very good copy. Nissen ZBI, 2527. Not in Caprotti.
