Prague, Paris, the author, 1867. 8vo (23.5 x 14.8 cm). 48 pp. Original printed wrappers.

From 1840 to his death Joachim Barrande (1799-1883) collected, described and drew the fossils of the central Bohemian Basin - this area has been called the Barrandian ever since. The strata of this basin are Proterozoic - early Palaeozoic in age. At that time 'Silurian' might be applied to strata that today are in the Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian or Devonian system. The results formed the outstanding monograph ' Système silurien du centre de la Bohème', which appeared in eight parts forming 28 quarto volumes. However, Barrande effectively published two series within his "Système Silurien". The second, of which this is an example, a series of zoogeographical, and phylogenetic papers and monographs on octavo format. Confusingly, several of the quarto volumes were published in octavo as well, including this publication, which is an offprint from the author's Système Silurien du centre de la Bohême, Volume II. Uncut. Inscribed by the author on the front wrapper, and the name of the receiver crossed out but still readable. Some slight soiling of the wrappers; otherwise, a very good, clean, unique copy.
