London, Dr. Thornton, 1812. Single leaf (38.0 x 30.5 cm). Mezzotint. Printed surface 36 x 24 cm.

A fine print, drawn by Russel and Opie, and engraved by Maddocks. First published in 1799 as frontispiece to Thornton's Botanical extracts, or Philosophy of Botany, Volume III (Soulsby, 3153). It was reprinted for Thornton's New Illustration of the Sexual System of Carolus Linnaeus, published in 1806 (Soulsby, 3154), however, as Easculapius, Flora, Ceres, and Cupid Honouring the Bust of Linnaeus (reversing the names, but not the image), but this 1812 edition is not listed by Soulsby. It differs from the earlier version in listing a new engraver - the first two were by Ridley. Rather toned, especially in the outer margins. Edges a bit frayed, with small tears and chips, otherwise very good. Rare. Soulsby, 3153.
