Aluminium Foil Samples
Aluminium-Folien. [Trade Catalogues].
Munich, Metallpapier- Bronzefarben- Blattmetallwerke Aktiengesellschaft München, [1936]-1938. Three oblong booklets (10.1 x 14.0-15.3 cm). Each with a title leaf and ca. 65 aluminium foil leaves, each either in silver or gold, and each with a different embossing with floral or geometrical patterns - or colour printing, and a catalogue number; one additionally giving the largest sheet size, and one with colour-printing on one side, the additional information provided on plain interleaves. All three with a silver grained or pebbled covers.
A gorgeous collection of aluminium or "tin" foil. In the first booklet, the sheets are mounted on thin paper; in the second, both sides are shiny; whereas in the third, one side is dull, pointing towards a different production process. "The continuous casting method is much less energy-intensive and has become the preferred process. It is difficult to produce rollers with a gap fine enough to cope with the foil gauge, and to avoid this, as well as reducing tearing, increasing production rates, and controlling thickness, for the final pass when producing thicknesses below 0.025 mm (1 mil), two sheets are rolled at the same time, doubling the thickness of the gauge at entry to the rollers. After the rollers, the two sheets are separated, which produces foil with one shiny side and one matte side" (Wikipedia). Two items have a printed text on the front cover ("5/36 Heft C", and "6/37 Heft D"), perhaps indicating the years 1936 and 1937. The third has a stamp, "Musterheft No. 111 20 Dezember 1938" on its front free endpaper. All three are, considering their age, in excellent condition
