Paris, P. Bertrand, 1843. Folio (33.0 x 24.0 cm). xv, 56 pp.; 27 lithographed plates including one map. 20th-century red buckram. Title in black on spine.

Offprint, being an Extrait des Comptes Rendus de l'Acadamie des Sciences. This work deals with North American Silurian fossils including newly described trilobites, corals, brachiopods, bivalves, ammonites, gastropods, etc. An important work by the French zoologist, palaeontologist and entomologist François [or ‘Francis’] Louis Nompar de Caumont La Force, Comte de Castelnau (1810-1880) and an early publication on this subject. Subsequently, between 1843 and 1847, Castelnau lead an expedition across South America from Rio de Janeiro to Lima, partly following the watershed between the Amazon and La Plata river systems, describing the Incas and their antiquities, the topography and scenery, and the botany and zoology in 17 volumes, for which he became famous. The map a bit foxed, the other plates less so, if not clean, and in all a very good copy. Nissen ZBI, 836; Sabin, [11410]. Neither in Hazen and Hazen nor in Ward and Carozzi.
