The author, Louis Ange Pitou (1767-1846) was a 'Papillon' (Henri Charrière) avant la lettre. A French author and counterrevolutionary, he entered the priesthood, but after the beginning of the French Revolution he abandoned his profession. A zealous royalist, he was arrested sixteen times, and finally transported to Guiana under the Directory. Shortly after his arrival at Cayenne he escaped, and after many adventures among the natives he returned to France. He engaged in new conspiracies under the consulate, and was a few years in prison" (Wikipedia). The German translation - published in the same year as the French edition - is very rare. We found no auction records. Old owner's inscription (name) on title. Some scattered spotting; small dampstain in the top margin, otherwise very good, complete. Sabin, 63060.
