Shanghai, Shanghai Mercury, 1910. 4to (27.8 x 21.8 cm). vi, 284 pp.; eight maps and plates, numerous text figures. Original full cloth with printed text on the front board. Purple endpapers.

Covers shooting expeditions to the Chinese Yangtze (or Yangzi) River valley and its shores and inland areas. Detailed information is given on hunting dogs, boat life, game birds, topography, etc., etc. With interesting accounts on the trapping of ducks in the river, and a chapter on Chinese methods of shooting and trapping game, among others. Lists of animals (species and - astonishing - numbers) killed by various shooting parties between 1875 and 1909 are also included. A much better than average copy, if not the best one currently available. Includes a lengthy index. Errata slip tipped in opposite p. 108. Some very light shelf wear, some minor spotting to the endpapers and a faint bump to some leaves. This may be a first printing, with the title on the front board in a special, oriental-style font. Another edition is known which differs only in having a less distinctive, western style binding. Not in Schwerdt.
