Paris, Christy, 1840. Oblong lithographed and hand-coloured plate ( (visible area 25.0 x 18.0 cm), in passepartout (37.0 x 43.0 cm).

A fine plate, captioned "Lion", and numbered "8", of a male lion catching a very large snake. Signed V. Adam. The Parisian painter and lithographer Jean-Victor Vincent Adam (1801-1886) was a pioneer in lithography printing. He is perhaps best known for his work historical paintings, city views and drawings of horses. He contributed illustrations to later editions of the Oeuvres complètes de Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon, but this illustration may be from another work. A very good, clean, copy of this attractive, lively illustration.
