[Roma], Ministero dell'Ambiente, Servizio Conservazione della Natura, and Instituto Nazionale per la Fauna Selvatica A. Ghigi, 2000. Two parts in two. Elephant folio (Atlas), 4to (text). 204 pp.; 83 fine coloured loose plates, all by Umberto Catalano. In original cloth portfolio with gilt title and vignette (49.2 x 34.6 x 5.1 cm).

A beautifully produced work on (all) Italian mammals, including bats and whales, with plates on fine thick paper. The text is in English and both the common and Latin name are given for each species. Each species has a description provided by a different mammalian specialist, providing data on the systematics, zoogeography (maps are included), origin of the Italian population, biology, prevalence and conservation. This is the official translation, by Peter W. Christie, of a work also published in Italian. Both editions are very uncommon. A very good copy.
