Design-paper - Papier Dominoté - Buntpapier
Design for wallpaper, book endpapers, or textiles.
Europe, [France or Italy], ca. 1780. Very large single sheet of wove rag paper (49.0 x 37.0 cm), with patterned olive-green printing and additional orange-yellow gouache painting.
A finely coloured sheet of printed paper, or papier dominoté (French) or Buntpapier (German), probably meant as endpapers for folio-sized books or other means, such as packing or decorating the interior of furniture. Possibly the work of Remondini, a firm of print publishers based in Bassano del Grappa and active from the mid-17th century to 1860. Vague stain to lower left part. Full-size, uncut and in excellent condition, the fine printing and painting strong.
