Leipzig, Paul Friedrich Vogel, 1821-1828. Oblong folio (24.3 x 19.5 cm). Calligraphed title "Atlas europaischer Schmetterline für Naturfreunde". 144 originally hand-coloured plates (numbered I-XVI nine times), on 72 leaves; with six more hand-coloured illustrations mounted on the rear board, and several more mounted on plate versos (as well as a few on rectos). Mid-19th-century patterned half cloth over marbled boards. Spine with gilt bands and title.

The complete atlas, without all text, of a work by the German entomologist Christian Friedrich Vogel, about whom very little else is known, except for being the author of another lepidopterological work, the Chronologischer Raupencalender oder Naturgeschichte aller europäischen Raupen (1835). Originally published in nine parts, in an octavo-format, with one leaf for each plate, but here rearranged with two plates each on one double-sized leaf. The names of the species have been added in a neat, old hand. The colouring is extensive, and neatly done - at least one illustration is heightened with gold. Pictorial bookplate of the Swiss naturalist Christian Sigrist mounted on the front pastedown. Light wear to board edges; small paper flaw, not affecting text or illustrations, on Plate 15; a few of the additional, mounted illustrations a bit foxed; the plates, however, clean. Rare. Horn-Schenkling, 22796. Not in Nissen ZBI.
