London, The Linnean Society of London, [1873]. 8vo (21.0 x 13.2 cm). 243 pp.; four lithographed plates. Nice contemporary half calf over marbled boards. Spine with four raised bands. Rich gilt compartments and title. Marbled endpapers; speckled edges.

George Bentham (1800-1884) was an English botanist who wrote several important books such as The Botany of the Voyage of HMS Sulphur and Flora Australiensis. In this work he discussed some novel ideas about the phylogeny of the composite plants, for instance in a plate captioned "Compositae Diagram of Tribes". Published in the Society's Journal, Botany volume VIII. This is an offprint with title page. The pagination, however, is the same as in the Journal's edition. Plates marginally a bit spotted, otherwise a fine copy. Not in Stafleu and Cowan.
