Milano, J. Bernardoni (for A. Stoppani), 1858-1871. 4to (31.5 x 24.2 cm). 95 pp.; 29 [I, I-XXVII] plates (first plate I, larger, double-folded, with cave profiles; plates II, XV, XVI, XVIII and XX also larger, folded). Early 20th century black buckram with gilt title on the spine.

Rare monograph by the Italian palaeontologist Émile (Emilio) Cornalia (1825-1882) on the palaeontology of Lombardy (northern Italy). It is important for the palaeontology of the Italian Alps as it covers the stratigraphy and mammalian palaeontology of the Lombardy region. This is volume II - and the only vertebrate part - of the "Paleontologie Lombardie ou description des fossiles de Lombardie", edited by the Italian palaeontologist Antonio Stoppani (1824-1891). One large, folded plate shows cave systems; several other large plates show bones and spectacular skulls of extinct mammals. Inscribed and signed by the author in the top margin of the title page. Fore edge of front free endpaper and first blank a bit chipped, otherwise a very good, clean copy. BM(NH) Cat. p. 2029; Nissen ZBI, 4004.
