Paris, Giraldon-Bovinet et Versailles, Le Poitevin, 1830. Small oblong folio (13.5 x 20.8 cm). Two title pages, [ii] pp.; 123 engraved plates, of which many double-sized or (much) larger, folded, or multi-folded. Contemporary-style half calf over marbled boards. Spine with four raised bands and two red morocco labels with gilt title. Edges red.

A rare and little-known work by the French postal inspector and writer Jean Vaysse de Villiers (1767-1834), perhaps better known for his Description routière et géographique de l'Empire français. This work depicts statues and other ornamental art, including vases and fountains, from the Versailles Gardens, but also of several buildings, including broad, multi-folded views of the main palaces of Louis XIII, and Louis XIV, and several other large "chateaux". The numerous statues are of Greek and Roman gods, and other mythological persons. Several plates have Vaysse de Villiers' own blind-stamp in the margin. Some marginal damp-staining, and scattered foxing. Otherwise, a very good, complete copy. Not in Brunet.
