London, Her Majesty's Stationery Office, 1887. 4to (31.8 x 25.0 cm). vii, lxviii, 275 pp.; 51 lithographed plates; 11 text engravings, one folded map. Original green embossed cloth. Gilt title and vignette, and printed label on the spine. Black endpapers.

A finely illustrated "Challenger" monograph dealing with demospongiae (i.e., all large, sponge-like species). The author, the reverend Stuart Oliver Ridley (1853-1935) was a zoologist working at the British Museum of Natural History in London. Included in this volume are two smaller contributions: Graff, L. von, Report on Myzostomida: supplement with four tinted lithographed plates, and W. M'Intosh, Report on Cephalodiscus Dodecalophus, with seven lithographed plates. Library label 'withdrawn" on the front pastedown. Binding a bit weak, front panel starting, due to the heavy book block. Otherwise a very good, clean copy without any further markings. Nissen ZBI, 1673 (Graff); 2638 (M'Intosh); 3419 (Ridley); 4754 (the Challenger Reports in general).
