London, Longman, Orme, Brown, Green & Longmans, and John Taylor, 1840. 12mo (17.1 x 10.6 cm). Letterpress title, engraved title with large vignette, 419 pp.; 130 text engravings. Publisher's green, embossed cloth with gilt title spine. Patterned endpapers. Printed errata slip bound in.

Swainson's major work on molluscan systematics with the introduction of many new genus and species names, and many fine engravings. The British zoologist (chiefly malacologist) William John Swainson (1789-1855) was responsible for several parts of Lardner's Cyclopaedia. Inscribed on the front free endpaper in an old hand (Dr. ... Marsh); stamp of the American malacologist Richard Irwin Johnson (1925-2020) in the top margin of the front free endpaper recto and title page. Spine slightly sunned, some very light foxing in a few places, otherwise an excellent, clean copy, with the errata slip, which is very often lacking. Caprotti II, pp. 58-59 [222-223]. Although well-illustrated, not in Nissen ZBI.
