Müller, H. [L. H.]
Alpenblumen, ihre Befruchtung durch Insekten und ihre Anpassungen an dieselben.
Leipzig, Wilhelm Engelmann, [1880]-1881. 8vo (22.7 x 15.3 cm). iv, 612 pp.; 173 (groups of) text engravings. Contemporary pebbled half cloth over marbled boards. Spine with gilt ornamental bands and title. Speckled edges.
A very uncommon - if not rare - contribution to pollination, in particular of Alpine flowers. Written by the German teacher, entomologist and botanist Heinrich Ludwig Hermann Müller (1829-1883) ["Hermann Müller von Lippstadt"], who specialized in pollination by insects. One of his works was translated into English, with a new preface by Charles Darwin. Provenance: small stamp of Willie Commelin Scholten, dated 1894, and a small bookplate of Alie Hagendoorn and Wim Klaucke, both on the front free endpaper recto. "Willie Commelin Scholten was a student who lived in the 19th century and was interested in plants. He studied with the famous plant geneticist Hugo de Vries in Amsterdam. In 1893 Willie died at a young age (25 years). His parents were wealthy, and in memory of their son they funded the establishment of a laboratory, which was to be devoted to research on plant diseases" (website plantenziektenkunde). Spine sunned, and with a single crack; title page very weakly spotted; otherwise, a very good, clean copy. Cat. BM(NH), p. 1368; Stafleu & Cowan, 6437. Not in Horn-Schenkling II.
