Papier dominoté [Colour-printed paper]
Pastoral scene with sheep, deer, sheep dogs and shepherds, one playing a flute.
Netherlands, ca. 1740. Single, oblong leaf (36.9 x 47.3 cm). White paper, hand-stamped in three colours (green, reddish brown, and ochre). Carefully (lightly) mounted in on a larger, protective-supportive sheet.
A stunning leaf of chintz paper showing a pleasant, quasi-repeating pattern with sheep, deer, sheep dogs and shepherds, one playing a flute. A similar, yet different design (containing a flute player too, but lacking, e.g., the deer and sheep dogs) is shown by Heijbroek and Greven. That design, preserved in the Rijksprentenkabinet in Amsterdam, is dated second half of the 18th century, and about half the size of the one we offer. Edges uncut, therefore a bit uneven; central vertical fold, as often. Heijbroek, J. F. and T. C. Greven (1994) Sierpapier. Marmer-, Brocaat- en Sitspapier in Nederland, p. 69.
