Rare first edition of a work by the French malacologist Louis Auguste Guillaume Bosc d’Antic (1759-1828). It was conceived as a continuation of Buffon. It deals with "Coquilles": largely molluscs, and a few brachiopods and foraminifers. Two more editions (in 1824 and 1836) were printed. These are slightly more common. All plates are present. All have a page reference, but not all are inserted in numerical order. Plate 2 is erroneously numbered 4. Nissen missed plates 13-15, which are present here. On the titles an old, small round private owner's stamp "Classenske Bogsamling" (i.e., the library of the Danish-Norwegian major-general, and industrialist Johan Frederik Classen [1725-1792], which contained more than 20,000 volumes); stamp of the American malacologist Richard Irwin Johnson (1925-2020) in the top margin of the half-titles. Some rubbing to the spines and boards. Small damp-stain to the lower margin and gutter of the title of the first volume and several leaves in Volume III, somewhat more extensive in the first and last few leaves.
