Berolini, Johann Andreas Rüdiger, 1734. Small 4to (20.5 x 16.0 cm). vi, 405 pp.; 11 mostly folded engraved plates. Contemporary full mottled calf. Spine with five raised, gilt-ornamented bands; compartments rich gilt, red morocco label with gilt title. Edges speckled red.
Published in seven volumes between 1710 and 1746, the Miscellanea Berolinensia was the primary journal of the Berlin Academy of Sciences. This volume contains, for instance, Kircher's " Commentatio de Portis Caspiis" (pp. 85-103 with one early engraved map of the Caspian Sea and surroundings, including the Tigris river); Jean Baptiste Clairaut's posing of three mathematical problems: I: " Dans un quarré donné a, b, c, d en inscrire un autre dont le coté soit aussi donné". II: " Maniere de faire un Exaëdre où un Cube dans un Tertraëdre regulier" and III: " Maniere de toiser les onglets des cones", pp. 139-142 with one folded engraving; A. Clairaut le Fils. " Quatre Problemes Sur de Nouvelles Courbes" pp. 143-152 with one folded engraving; A. Grischow, " Hyetometri" with folded engraving of this machine; J. Eller, " Calculi Vesicae membrana cincti vel inclusi generatio, theoretice illustrata et practice comprobata" with two folded engravings and several other contributions by Johann Frisch on German history and etymology. Also some astronomical contributions, mainly on eclipses (with plates). Bookplate removed long ago from front pastedown, remnants of an old, oval stamp on the title page; some - mostly marginal - foxing in the text and small repairs to several plates. In all, a good, complete copy.
