Breslau and Bonn, Academia Caesareae Leopoldino-Carolinae, 1837. Large 4to (29.3 x 22.4 cm) title page, 72 pp. [pp. 713-784]; three finely engraved plates. Contemporary pebbled cloth over marbled boards. Gilt title on the spine.
Johann Ludwig Christian Carl Gravenhorst (1777-1857) published on herpetology and entomology. This is "an extremely important paper for the herpetology of western South America" [P. E. Vanzolini, 1977 in An annotated bibliography of the land and fresh-water reptiles of South America (1758-1975)]. It contains the descriptions and illustrations of new and little-known species. Often the work is dated as of 1838, but that seems to be wrong. Spine repaired, with later gilt title. Fore edge of front free endpaper with skilful repair, inner joints strengthened; a few spots to the text and on the first plate, otherwise a very good copy of this rare work. Adler I, p. 28; Vanzolini, p. 56. Not in Nissen ZBI.
